Rockefeller Center in Manhattan, in conjunction with the US Smithsonian, has unveiled a 25 foot, 15k pound statue of a man with exaggerated sub-Saharan facial features. The man sit on a throne with an Olympic style torch.
The artist, Sandford Bigger’s, is a Black racial activist who specializes racially charged artwork. He claims the statue is an “interrogation” of European sculpture history. He claims there is a “white-washing” of sculpture history and alleges an appropriation of African art by Westerners.
Rockefeller Center is a 19 building complex on 22 acres. Among other things, it houses the New York studios of NBC.
